The Road to Emmaus

This winter and spring we’ve been journeying through the Gospel of Luke as we trace Jesus’ life and ministry as it led him to, and ultimately beyond, the cross. During Lent we focused on exploring how God meets us “in between” extremes, such as between lost and found, righteousness and mercy, grief and hope.

Our Bible story this week depicts another encounter with Jesus, this time in between the close of Jesus’ earthly ministry and the opening of the next chapter in the life of the church.

Guest preacher (and United Parish member) Kate Baker-Carr writes,

“The second Sunday of Easter finds us on a seven mile walk from Jerusalem to Emmaus. The travelers we encounter are downcast, even heartbroken; their hopes for the Messiah had been crucified. And yet, as they walked the long road, their hearts burned within them as the stranger who appeared in their midst engaged them in intriguing Biblical interpretation. Still, it was not the thorough teaching that awakened recognition, but the everyday act of breaking bread.

In the season of Easter we are invited to view our lives and the life of the world in the light of resurrection glory. On our journeys, in what everyday events might we recognize the Risen Christ for us and for the world?”

Join us at 11am on Sunday in the sanctuary and online to worship, learn, journey, and pray together. I always look forward to seeing you there.

In faith,

Amy
