Words for the Beginning: Do the Good That is Yours to Do

Advent marks the beginning of the liturgical year, and this Advent, our aptly-named worship curriculum invites us to explore “Words for the Beginning: Advent Reminders for New Seasons.” From December 1st through January 5th, we’ll dive into the themes of blessing, companionship, risky hope, abiding love, holy laughter, crooked roads and a whole lot more!

“How do you eat an elephant?” the joke/proverb asks. The answer is “one bite at a time.” It’s a philosophical groaner, a wise un-joke that reminds us how to approach seemingly insurmountable problems, whether it’s the vast scale of injustice in our society, or the ever-growing “laundry mountain” on the spare bed: piece by piece, folded shirt by folded shirt.

Our worship curriculum writes,

As John the Baptist is teaching about bearing good fruit, the crowds, tax collectors, and soldiers ask him, “What, then, should we do?” His answer to each group is slightly different, but ultimately the same: “Do the good that is yours to do.” We can each bear good fruit through acts of justice and righteousness. We can all be what Isaiah calls “repairers of the breach” by satisfying the needs of the afflicted.

Join us in worship on Sunday at 11am in the Sanctuary and on YouTube to ponder together, “what’s mine to do?” Together, we’ll tackle the laundry-mountain, dismantle injustice, and perhaps eat a metaphorical elephant or two.

I always look forward to seeing you there.

In faith,

Amy

P.S. Join us before worship at 9:45am in the Parlor to study the Word, connect in fellowship, and make a quilt together! All are welcome, no sewing needed!
