Promises Made: Abraham

This autumn, we drop into various stories of the Bible sequentially, starting at the beginning — following along with our young people in Church School. We look at the promises God makes with humanity and how those promises get broken. We look at our relationship with God and how we honor and keep it.

One night many, many years ago, an old guy named Abraham was staring out into the night sky talking with God. He was getting on in years, childless, uncertain about his future, but God assured him: Look up at the sky and count the stars if you think you can count them. This is how many descendants you will have (Genesis 15:5).

It was a promise. A promise that we’re still living out to this day — for we are, in fact, Abraham and Sarah’s descendants in the faith. We are among the trillions of Muslims, Jews and Christians who have followed his story.

On Sunday, I’m going to invite us to think about legacy. The legacy of those who gave us life, taught and mentored us. The legacy, known or unknown, that we have on the lives we influence. I also want us to think about the legacy of our community, the promise that we continue to carry out and the promise given for us to steward and carry forward. Where are our stars in this constellation of faithful people?

We will sing, we will pray, we will greet one another. And after worship, we will have a special coffee hour to honor and celebrate our Associate Pastor Amy and her husband Zac, freshly back from their honeymoon. I look forward to seeing you there!

In faith,
Kent

Contribute to a Love Offering for Amy and Zac!
If anyone would like to contribute to a love offering in honor of Amy and Zac’s wedding, you may do so by labeling it “wedding” and place it in the offering plate – or leave it in the Church Office. You can make checks out to United Parish and everything will be combined into an offering for them. You may also send a donation via PayPal (visit PayPal.me/unitedparish), Venmo (search @unitedparishinbrookline), Realm, or our website. (If you use our website, Paypal or Realm, make a one-time payment to the General Operations/Ministries of United Parish, THEN, send an email to assistanttreasurer@upbrookline.org to let us know “My payment of $XX.00 made today is for Amy and Zac’s gift”.) There will be a wedding cake celebration for them when Amy returns to worship on Sunday, September 15 so offerings need to be in the office ASAP. And Shhhhh! this is a secret! Contact gathering@upbrookline.org with any questions.
