Advent Windows: Artful Hopes and Prayers

This Advent, our congregation and neighbors are invited to create artistic displays in the window wells of our sanctuary that illustrate our most heartfelt prayers and hopes for ourselves, for each other, for the earth, for future generations, and for generations past. Displays will remain in place from December 3 to January 7 and can be installed throughout the weeks prior to Christmas.

A few things to think about:

• Displays don’t need to be stereotypical religious, or Christian content.
• The window wells contain heat vents and don’t like greenery and things that melt.
• Displays will likely be touched by curious little fingers.
• You don’t have to be an artist. These are joyful expressions so just fill a window with your hopes and prayers.
• Displays may feature a written explanation of the creator’s intentions. “United Parish believes in a future where all people feel accepted and loved for who they are without exception.” A written statement is not required.
• Battery operated candles only.

Here are a few examples:

• Patty S. is going to create a window that expresses her hope that people living with dementia can be treated with dignity and respect in the coming year.
• Julie A. is going to display a creche nativity scene.
• Susan D. will express her hopes and prayers for the pollinators.

Watch for workshops and displays at coffee hour to get you thinking about your, your family’s or special groups window.

There are 17 windows that can be decorated in the sanctuary, and 6 windows that can be decorated in the adjacent chapel. Ten windows are 48″ x 15″, ten are 36″ x 18″, and three are 24″ x 14″.
